Elycia Chew
Assistant Director
My name is Elycia Chew. I have three amazing children who were all products of GCDC.
I am approaching my 25th year at GCDC. I taught kindergarten for 18 years and pre-k for 2 years. I then became the summer program manager for 8 years and an associate director while teaching all the way through. I accepted the position of Assistant Director. Each year at GCDC is a new adventure.
Throughout life, you learn that there is always room to grow and try new things. This year will begin my 3rd year as an assistant director. Not only will I be greeting and happily enrolling new students and parents, but I will also continue to be a supportive instrument to the staff, the Business Director, and my Program Director. In doing so, I too will grow and learn from them. As professional educators, we must stay current with the latest practices in the field of education. As I embark on my 4th year as the assistant director, I continue to attend national and state conferences to meet with fellow directors to learn how the state of early childhood is evolving.
Over the years, I have developed more patience and my love for teaching continues to blossom. My goal is to mentor and coach effective teaching techniques to the next generation of educators. I will continue to work with parents and provide them with tools to utilize educational and developmental strategies that can be used anywhere in their day-to-day lives, such as the grocery store or sorting rocks at the beach. I believe it’s important to make the most of your time and enjoy teachable moments with children.
My teaching philosophy is to acknowledge that children are different and have varied learning styles. Just like explorers, they are discovering new things each day. As a teacher, it is my job to provide a challenging, yet developmentally appropriate environment that is conducive to the learning and nurturing of today’s children. As an Assistant Director, I will meet my staff where they are and provide them with the resources, they need to develop their vision as a professional childcare educator.
I am looking forward to a successful school year, nurturing an environment with staff, families, and the GSFC community.
