GCDC Egg Drop Flyer 2024 (002)The Great Egg Drop is an experiment where each parent and child team attempt to create a device that can keep a raw chicken egg intact when dropped from a height. Each parent and child team will need to create something that can absorb the energy the egg gathers as it accelerates towards the ground. A hard surface will crack the egg so you must think carefully about how you can protect it. Something that will cushion the egg at the end of its fall is a good place to start. You want the egg to decelerate slowly so it doesn’t crack or smash all over the ground. To sign up, please visit your classroom signup.
When/Where/Time
Our egg drop will take place on May 16th, 2023, at 10:00am outside our neighboring building, B26. The distance of the drop is @ 15.5’. For safety reasons, the parent will drop the egg from the building. The child will stand on the ground. In addition to safety, this ensures your child will have a good view of the egg drop.
Research: Teachers will begin the research process with the children by learning and reading about how to make a parachute, gravity, and weight. Then they will chart their predictions, knowledge and, materials using a KWL chart. Parents can use this as the foundation for their planning of their egg drop contraption.
Brainstorm: With your child’s help think about the materials you need for your parachute that will protect the egg?
Choose Your Items: Feathers, Foam, Bubble Wrap, Shredded Paper, Coffee Filters, Tissue Paper, Wax Paper, Plastic Bags, Balloons, Cardboard, Peanuts, etc.
Build/Create: Now it’s time to build your parachute from the items you have decided to work with.
Test: Test out your egg drop contraption.
Redesign: Talk with your child about what you may need to adjust or change. The process is more valuable to your young one then the product!
